CASology Week #79: Contrast

Welcome to Week #79 at CASology, where the cue word is CONTRAST.   Our sponsor this week is My Creative Classroom.   This week's winner will receive a free seat to any online workshop class.

There are so many directions you could go with this word.  I started thinking about the contrast between black and white and color.  Lately, I've been playing around with this idea--using color in small doses for greater impact.

I used an image from Lil Inkers Modern Mehndi that had a lot of detail.  I am loving this Mehndi set right now.  I stamped my sentiment and one of the flowers (the one I knew I would color in).  Then I masked that flower and stamped and masked all the way up and around that corner of the card.  I very carefully colored just that one flower in with Copics, ran that panel through my big shot with the PTI Canvas/Linen Impression plate, and then added black Ranger enamel dots to all the flower centers.  I used a raised panel on a base rather than a one layer card because my Copics bleed through the PTI card stock.

As a reminder, here are some points from the CASology blog to keep in mind when you are creating a card in the CAS (clean and simple) style:

1.  One main image
2.  Lots of open space--uncluttered
3.  Limited layers and embellishments
4.  Quick and easy to recreate (note--it may take a long time to get a design you like, but once you have that design, making more should be a piece of cake)

Just for fun, Melissa challenged us to make another version of our card that is not CAS.  Ouch--that was a very hard assignment for me.  I had to do the opposite of all those things above, and I will tell you that it was painful.  I thought I would end up with a huge mess.  I have tremendous respect for those of you who can create layered  and highly embellished  creations that are cohesive and beautiful.

I used the same stamp set, but you can see a very different card.  Lots of die cuts and layers, no open or white space at all, 2 types of patterned papers and a bow.  Now, I am actually happy with this card, although I would say that the first card is more my style.  Any one of these design elements might find their way onto one of my CAS cards, but definitely not all of them at the same time.

Here they are together:

Check out the beautiful designs from the CASology Design Team members and see how they were inspired by CONTRAST.  Then, please play along and link your creation to the CASology blog by Sunday, January 26 by 4PM (CST).

How will you be inspired by CONTRAST?

  2. WOW Joyce, these are both gorgeous. I absolutely love the first one with the single colored flower and how you placed the sentiment.

The second one looks wonderful as well.

  3. What a great pair of cards Joyce. The first on eis more my style too but I really like the second card too. There is lots of lovely detail but it still looks uncluttered and clean somehow. Great job!

  6. Fantastic post Joyce, the pop of colour is gorgeous on your first card.It is hard when we challenge ourselves to create in a style that isn't in our comfort zone, but your card turned out just fabulous!

  7. Joyce, both cards (CAS and not-so-CAS) are beautiful! I think it is so funny that we all love CAS so much that doing a "busy" card is actually hard! I think our not-so-CAS cards are more like "clean and layered." Yours are both beautiful...and it is great to see them side by side for comparison!

  19. Beautiful work on both cards Joyce. I love it when a card only has a little bit colored on it. Love the contrast on your last card with the colored papers.

  20. Joyce, I just love your card. As soon as I saw it, it reminded me of the Mehndi design we Indians make on our palms. On reading your post, came to know that they have come up with stamps too!!! Your second card is beautiful too, but the first one just steals the show :)

  21. Hi Joyce. What beautiful cards - great take on "contrast" within each card, and from one to the other. You have gone from one style to the other beautifully. Your craft gets better all the time!

  22. Joyce. Joyce. Joyce. Look at these beauties! I love the Mehndi design...great idea to color one in and leave the rest "au natural"! I especially LOVE your "non-you" card...look at that bow...and a doily too! Classy and elegant...

  24. Awesome example of contrast! I love the pop of colour from the one flower on the first card (must get that set of stamps…) It really has such impact on a simple card. And go you on the second card! It may not be your usual style but you nailed it!

As for Copics and cardstock - I ended up buying Gina K paper solely for use on one layer colored cards.

  28. Joyce, these are simply amazing! And so you! If I saw this card on a challenge blog I would know if was created by you without seeing your name under it. It is contrast in perfection!
