CASology 100 Challenges Celebration

I am so happy that I am being featured on the CASology blog as part of our 100 challenges celebration.  You can head over there to read all about me.  Go ahead....I'll wait.  But don't forget to come back because I have more to show you here.

First up is another card for this week's cue word CELEBRATE.    I had an idea for a embossed and water colored background.  It did NOT turn out how I imagined it would.

What was I thinking, right?  Well, I was able to salvage parts of this piece and made something I ended up really liking.

There must be a moral to the story....something about making lemonade out of my lemon of card stock.

I thought I would use this post to show how I organize all the cards I have made.  If you stop by here regularly, you know that I make a lot of cards.  I devised a system to organize my cards by theme, which makes it easy to find the cards I need when it is time to send them out.  It is also much easier for my friends and family to find what they are looking for when they come by to select cards for themselves.

I use bins from The Container store called Frosted Totes to hold all my cards.  The bins are stored in a shoe rack I got from Target.  The entire set up fits underneath the table where I keep my Big Shot, scoring board and paper cutter.

Each bin has a label on the front, indicating what type of cards are stored inside.  I actually have two bins for birthday cards.

I made dividers using a piece of Michaels card stock and a piece of colored card stock cut with a Half and Half Die and stamped with an appropriate sentiment.  Within birthday, I have belated, masculine, juvenile, and general.

Most of my bins have cards covering multiple themes.  I used a sentiment stamp on the bin's label as well as on the divider.

So, for example, this bin has cards that are blank (no sentiment), suitable for a cancer patient, get well, missing you, etc.

I like to stamp some sort of handmade by sentiment on the back of each card, and add my initials.

To save space, I do not store any envelopes with my cards, unless I have stamped or decorated the envelope, in which case I keep it with its matching card.

My bins are not all full yet, and I do have room for one more bin, so I have some room to grow with this system.  If you are interested in how I organize some of my other supplies, you can click here to see all my posts on organization.  Sometimes I think that I like organizing my supplies almost as much as I like using them.

A Give Away  It wouldn't be a celebration without a give away, would it?  Please leave me a comment with an organizational tip and you will have a chance to win this stamp set from Flourishes.

This contest will run until 8AM Central Time on Thursday, 6/19.

Edited to add:  Congratulations to Lilian YF who is the winner of this Flourishes stamp set.  Big thanks to everyone who commented and left me an organizational tip.  I have seen quite a few good tips that I will be using in the future.

Thanks for Visiting

  1. Love your organized cards! That works out just perfectly in the shoe shelves! I keep my projects for scrapbooking in separate plastic 12 x 12 boxes and label each, then stack them in alphabetical order. I keep my photos in photo boxes stored in a bookshelf. For cards, I keep embellishments hanging on a rack, clipped on and sorted by theme.

  5. Joyce my very good friend, I love your style and always have. You are truly the most organized person I have met in this crazy blogging world and have inspired me to 'get it together'. You are also my favourite 'personal shopper', always finding things for me that I really do need to buy and can't be without. Thanks for sharing your card organization today, I think we all have a few extras laying around! Of course leave me out of your drawing, LOVE being on CASology with you--xoxo

  7. LOVE your card! And what a fabulous storage system, you have! This is something I need! ;) And to be quite honest, my 'storage system' is not the best...I have no actual craft room, just a little corner in my bedroom. Which holds a little media center to house my things (Who am I kidding!?!...Really, it doesn't hold much, so I have my stuff in the closet, on the dresser, on top of the media center...it's bad! lol). Though, almost everything does have a place that it goes. Some are clear shoe box containers, ribbon is on an old plate holder thing (I don't know what you call the things. lol), stamps are in boxes that my husband brought home from work (they are pretty close to those plastic bins, though just cardboard). Though, one things for sure, I have to keep everything clean! ;) That really is one way to stay quite organized! :)
Well, I could go on and on...lol...But I think I'll save you from that! ;) Thanks for sharing!

  8. Your card is gorgeous. I love the paper peeking through the die and I'm glad you were able to salvage your water colored paper.

Love how you organize your cards. You have so many. I used to have quite a few but am down to about less than 10 total in my stash. Yikes!

I'm not super organized but I like to keep matching dies in my Tim Holtz like pockets that I store my stamps in.

  9. I have a pink glittery plastic tote (used to house Polly Pocket bits & pieces) that holds most of my cards, but I've out grown it and need categorize better. Love the labels stamped with the sentiments Joyce! You definitely made lemonade with the inked panel that didn't quite turn out as you envisioned - love the color variation peeking through the Piestra die,

  10. Oh, I love your card, Joyce and how you "saved" the watercolour panel! And your card storage looks great, too!

  11. Love how your card turned out! Pretty butterfly!
Great organizing of your cards! I'm impressed by how many you have already made up! I fly by the seat of my pants and make them as I need them!

  12. I love your watercoloring showing through the die on the card. Great save! I have all my cards in Ikea boxes that come with a metal label holder. I have two birthday boxes, one for Congrats/Anniversary/Holiday and one for Sympath/Get Well/Thank you/Thinking of You. Now if I'd only file them away as soon as I make them I'd be all set. ;)

  13. I love seeing how you organize your cards. I just gave away 50 cards for teacher gifts so I am down to very, very few cards! This card you created today is stunning. Love the inking behind the die cuts.

  14. I love your card, Joyce ... background, die cutting, butterfly ... all so delicious! Your so beautifully organised card stash is amazing ... your family must be in there all the time, taking turns to pick out their faves to send out! Anita :)

  15. Such a fabulous card, Joyce! I love how you used your inked/embossed panel for your butterfly and die cut border...such a lovely CAS design, too!
My organizational tip is: I keep die cuts (mostly small ones) in baggies with like die cuts and I label them, so they're easy to find. Once bagged, I keep them in a medium sized basket on the corner of my desk. I find that I use them more often this way. Thanks so much for a chance to win!

  16. Oh my gosh Joyce! I love your happy mistake or whatever you call it! What a simply gorgeous card! The best!
I love how you always have everything so organized. Now I want those too:) do you think we have too many cards! Thanks for sharing. I am off to see your feature!

  17. Hi, Joyce! I love your card (a great recovery!) and your card storage system. Very clean and simple...hmmm, imagine that! :) My hubbie bought me a spinning card rack off of eBay that I love...but I really like this bin idea, too! No need to count me in the drawing, just wanted to say how much I enjoy being on the CASology DT with you!

  18. I love how you organize your cards, Joyce! Great system. I need to do this.
I LOVE your gorgeous card too. Turned out awesome!

  19. Love your idea, my cards are in several old envelope boxes, so not pretty. House or stamping, I used to be organized, but then I got too much stuff. wait a minute, we can never have too much...... My tip is to get some cubes that fit the 12x12 cases sold at Michaels etc, four to a cube. Then store stamps, embellishments by holiday.

  20. LOVE getting to know you a bit more Joyce! Your finished card is fabulous - talk about making lemonade out of lemons. Nicely done. I organize my cards like yours but I don't have nearly as many. Love how you used your half and half dies - great idea! Will have to check out your other organizational posts. Oh and great idea to stamp the 'handmade' at the back already. I never do that but really should. I try to sort out any cards that I know I won't use (cuz I don't send that type of card or can't think of anyone a particular card could go to) away in a separate box that will go to Operation Write Home. That way they don't clutter my card box up.

  21. I love your card organization method. I am a beginning card-maker, but if I keep making them I will definitely have to start organizing my finished cards. I like to use chipboard letters and often mix and match colors, letters, and styles. In order to make this a bit easier I purchased two plastic drawer organizers that were meant to be used for nails and screws. I labeled each drawer with a cardstock letter or shape and sort my chipboard letters into these drawers. It is SO EASY to pull out the drawers for just the letters that I need. I can either use a single color or style or I can mix and match to my heart's desire!

  22. Beautiful card! I don't have as many cards as you do, but I organize them in a similar fashion...just one box. My "trick" is create lots of blank cards. I can stamp sentiments inside later. :)

  23. Joyce, first your card is simply gorgeous! I love your butterfly and that paper...just beautiful. I always love seeing your organizing, you are just the best at it my sweet friend. As for a tip, I store my big rolls of baker's twine in old sugar dispenser jars, you know the ones with the silver tips.

  24. What a great way to store your cards! I keep my cards organized in photo storage boxes from my local craft store. I have four boxes filled up now and will probably need to buy another one soon. Guess I should be sending more out!

  25. Hello, I loved your card!
And I also bought similar bins (but they are smaller) at the dollar store for cards! =)
As for my "tip", I store my cling stamps in DVD cases (in drawers) and unmounted stamps and small clear stamp sets in pocket pages in a binder.

  26. Joyce your salvaged card is a winner. Thanks for sharing your filing system for your multitude of cards.

  27. Your card is beautiful! I have an obsession with butterflies and love to see them used in different ways. My tip is how I store my washi tape (another obsession). I use empty tinfoil and saran wrap boxes, which I cover with paper - color coding each one for easy reference. Works perfectly! AJ@queenofmynest

  28. Oh your card did turn out well ... love your watercolored panel as a background! And after seeing your storage, I'm thinking you must be very good about sending out a ton of cards. I have about 4 boxes full of cards, and you make about 20x more than I do. Hmmm. That is not good, I need to start moving my cards out of here!! Anyway, I'm so excited you shared your storage with us, thank you! Love the labels and dividers you use. And you have indeed proven that you do not pay rent on a storage locker, as I once imagined : )

  31. Your 'rescued' card is gorgeous! I likely would have trashed it, incomplete dismay, but now you've given me 'inspiration' for saving the 'lemons.' Your organization tips: thank you! My crafting space is incredibly small; I craft on a corner of the kitchen counter. Every crafting episode involves taking out..and putting away...repeat daily. As a result, I need to be as 'tidy' as possible. One of my 'tips' - and it's really more of me being 'obsessive' - keeping things alphabetized, by company. It's the only way I can find things. So, in my little bins, I have my stamps/dies by company, and within that, they're alphabetical; same for paper pads. Yes, a bit (okay, a lot) OCD, but given my teensy space, it works well for me! Thanks for the give-away opportunity! ~c
